As many of you know we have been out of stock on our #10 cans of Powdered Whole Eggs and Egg Whites for about 3 months. This has been as a result of working with the USDA on plant and label approval with new stricter requirements with respect to eggs. We've endured numerous delays and setbacks throughout the process. About a week ago we had received approval to begin Production. We did so and even had product on UPS trailers ready to be picked up. We got a call from the USDA stating that they had put us through the wrong process and we would have to start over again. We had to pull all of the outbound orders and go back into a holding pattern. At this point we are moving through the process but have no idea when we'll be back in business with the canned eggs. It is a frustrating situation with one of our best sellers and we apologize for the delay. DO NOT EMAIL YOUR ORDER TO WALTON, but print off a copy of the order. Using their shipping weight total, calculate shipping by multiplying the total shipping weight by .19 (₵). Add that amount to the total cost of the items, then add a $5 drop charge to that amount.

A quick reminder about my list. On my list are items that I think are a good deal -- ONLY if you use an available coupon. These items are denoted with a +c*. A good example this week is from Meijer:

These little single serving microwave brownie and cakes are on sale for $1. At that price I don't think it's a good deal. But when you pair it with a $0.50 or $0.75 coupon that's available, you can get them for free. One caveat I've learned is that Meijer now only doubles two like coupons. So, if you've been saving warm delights coupons for a deal like this, only the first two will be doubled. Don't like these warm delights or don't need the temptation at home? Why not pick up one for free (or nearly free) and donate it to your local food pantry. I think someone struggling financially would like a little sweet thing.

And while we're talking about food pantries, I'd like to strongly encourage you to donate throughout the year to a food pantry. During the summer, families still have needs, but most pantries don't get as many donations. We use coupons and sales to get good food throughout the year to donate. My kids like to shop with me when they get to pick out some kid friendly flavors. I've seen them in the store debating on which variety to buy and choosing the one they see most kids eating at lunch. Last week I picked up some cleaning supplies for the food pantry and the kid in tow picked out the bottle with the most product in it. She wanted to make every penny count. 2010 Oregon Fruit and Berry Order - due June 26

2010 Oregon Fruit & Berry Order Information
Order Deadline - Must Be Rec'd & Paid In Full By Saturday, June 26th

This is the twelfth year we have been placing a group order for IQF, or individually quick frozen, fruit and berries from Oregon. If you are interested in ordering any of this fruit I must receive your orders and your payment by Saturday, June 26th. As in the past, all orders must be prepaid. That's because I have to pay for the full order in advance. Delivery is usually in September or early October, but I will notify you by e-mail as soon as I get a delivery date and time.

These fruits come in cardboard boxes with individually quick frozen berries (no sugar unless indicated), or as fruit pieces (apples, peaches, apricot halves, red rhubarb) packed inside a large plastic bag filled with 14# of fruit. The seedless berry purees and sliced, sweetened strawberries come in plastic buckets.

Be sure to state which fruits or berries you want, the quantities (how many boxes or buckets of each) and the price per item, then the total for each item. Then please total your whole order and send me a check for the full amount. Make checks out to me: Norma Curry. Please include your e-mail address so that I can send you an e-mail acknowledging that I have received your order and payment. I will also be sending notice about pick-up by e-mail.

Fruit pick-up is usually in September or early October at Northland Ice Center, or somewhere in the parking lot behind Joann's in the same shopping center in Evendale, just east of I-75 on Glendale Milford, or west of I-71 on Pfeiffer at US42 (Reading Road). Pfeiffer becomes Glendale Milford west of Reed Hartman.

Any price increases this year are mostly due to increased fuel costs, and then only $1.00 more per box. Blueberries, which were $52 in 2007, are only $39 this year. Red Raspberries, which were $49 in 2008, are only $44 this year, still up due to short crops on the world market in Europe and Chile, as well as continued low yields in the Northwest.

This is an open group order, not restricted to CATCH (Cincinnati Area Teaching Children at Home) members. We can only get this fruit delivery once a year, so don't miss out on Mother Nature's best tasting anti-oxidant boosters. These are great in smoothies, pies, cakes, muffins, in yogurt or on top of ice cream. We put frozen berries in our oatmeal every morning. The Butler County office needs volunteer drivers to assist with our transportation program. The transportation program provides free transportation to medical appointments to individuals living in the cities of Middletown, Monroe, Trenton and the townships of Madison and Lemon. Clients are people who lack reliable access to alternative sources of transportation. The program is designed to help individuals live independently for as long as possible. Volunteers transport clients in a Chrysler Pacifica on Mondays through Fridays, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

It's time to put in another order to Walton Feed. To find out what you would like to order, go to www.waltonfeed.com and, using their shopping cart, select the items that you wish. Do not send the order to Walton--they won't recognize it as part of our group order. Print out the order and using the total weight on the order multiply the weight by .19 cents to get your shipping cost.** Add the total amount for product to the total amount for shipping, then add $5 for the drop charge. The orders need to be to me by May 10th.

Just a reminder that the Bishop’s Storehouse and Dry Packing area is open every Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

If persons want to dry pack, they need to contact Brother Lewis at 740-654-6564 and make an appointment to make sure that he is not overbooked and that he will have whatever is needed for dry packing.

March Trip to the Cannery

We are planning a trip to the Indy Cannery for March 27, 2010 (Saturday). If you are interested in attending, please contact me as soon as possible!

We are not able to bring our own food. (That's why I do the bulk canning at my house, which will happen on May 22.)

I'll need a list of what people want to order by Wednesday, the 24st. The order form is found here.

People can order any number of items canned or pouched (the first 2 columns). Or- you can order bulk bags (the third column). Or- you can order the prepackaged items (on the bottom left.)

You don't need to order individual cans, pouches, or oxygen absorbers. If you order 6 cans, you get 2 free lids and a box. If you order 5 pouches, you get a free box.

Sunday's paper has a LOT of great coupons again this week. Cut out what you might use in the coming weeks. You can also print out coupons at home using my coupon sidebar on my blog (www.moneysavinghabits.com). There are over 180 coupons available. Each month the coupons are reset. I usually find 5-10 coupons that I will use right away. Taking a few extra minutes to scroll through the options really helps me keep my grocery budget down. Set your default printer to print only in black and save a ton on ink. I print on the backs of school worksheets.

Trip to the Cannery

We are planning a trip to the Indy Cannery for February 23, 2010 (Tuesday). If you are interested in attending, please contact me as soon as possible!

We are not able to bring our own food. (That's why I do the bulk canning at my house).

I'll need a list of what people want to order by Sunday, the 21st. The order form is found here.

People can order any number of items canned or pouched (the first 2 columns). Or - they can order bulk bags (the third column). Or- they can order the prepackaged items (on the bottom left.)

They don't need to order individual cans, pouches, or oxygen absorbers. If they order 6 cans/pouches, they get 2 free lids and a box.

Who can donate:

Anyone who is in good health, is at least 17 (16 years old with parental consent) years old and weighs at least 110 pounds may donate blood every 56 days.

General Eligibility Requirements

* Donors must be at least 17 (16 years old with parental consent) years of age
* Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds
* Donors must present a CBC Donor I.D. Card
* Donors must be in good health

Food/Sleep

* Eat nourishing meals before and after donation
* Drink plenty of fluids before and after donation
* Get a good nights sleep prior to donation

Length of Time Between Donations

Whole Blood Collection

* Donors must wait 56 days following a whole blood donation before donating again

Automated Blood Collection (Apheresis)

* Donors must wait 7 days following a platelet donation before donating again
* Donors must wait 28 days following a plasma donation before donating plasma again

Reasons for Permanent Deferral from Blood Donation

* Hepatitis after age 11
* IV Drug User (even one time)
* Certain obstructive lung disorders
* Certain liver disorders
* Persons who have taken Tegison for psoriasis
* Persons who have taken human-derived pituitary growth hormone, had a dura mater transplant or who have a relative diagnosed with CJD

Reasons for Temporary Deferral from Blood Donation

* Current cold or flu symptoms, including a cough, sore throat and/or fever
* Dental work – defer for 24 hours after procedure for root canal, oral surgery, extraction of wisdom teeth; must be asymptomatic in all instances and all packing removed
* Pregnancy, miscarriage or abortion – defer for 6 weeks after delivery or termination of pregnancy
* Blood Transfusion – defer one year
* Malaria – defer for 3 years after last symptoms
* Mononucleosis – must be fully recovered
* Ear or Body Piercing under non-sterile conditions – one year
* Tattoo – unless performed in a licensed parlor either in Ohio or Kentucky, there is a one year deferral

Medications

* Most medications taken within 24 hours are acceptable
* Antibiotics are not acceptable to take 24 hours before donation
* Donors who have taken Accutane, Proscar, or Propecia must be deferred for 30 days after the last dose
* Donors who have taken Avodart must be deferred for 6 months after the last dose
* Consult with a Nursing Supervisor or Charge Nurse concerning immunizations or injections and the deferral period associated with the immunization
* There is no deferral period for the flu vaccine or pneumonia vaccine; there is a three day deferral for the Hepatitis B vaccine; see below for contact information

Diabetes/Blood Pressure

* Donors with well-established (not recently diagnosed) diabetes, who are controlled by diet, oral medications and/or insulin therapy, are eligible to donate
* Controlling medications must have been used in the 24 hours before donation
* Donors with controlled high blood pressure by diet, oral medications are eligible to donate

Consult with a CBC Nursing Supervisor

* History of Yellow Jaundice not associated with Hepatitis
* History of heart disease, heart attack, stroke or open heart surgery
* Travel outside the U.S. or Canada in the last 12 months
* Kidney disease
* Diagnosis, treatment or positive test for a sexually transmitted disease
* Hepatitis exposure
* History of cancer
* While being in the military, stationed in Europe 1980 to 1996

Donation Process

* Prospective donors first complete a health history questionnaire and screening interview.
* The next step involves a brief physical examination of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and a test for anemia.
* If the prescribed medical requirements are met, a unit (about one pint) of blood is drawn from the donor. Afterwards, donors are served refreshments while remaining seated for 10 minutes.
* The entire process usually takes less than one hour.

Kroger is having another MEGA EVENT (buy 10 things get $5 off). However the list in the ad isn't very interesting. Recent prices with coupons were cheaper.

Meijer is having a store brand sale. Many items are decent prices if you don't usually use coupons. However I'm not including them on this list, because I'm a coupon shopper. So, flip through your ad and see if there's anything you need to stock up on. Not sure if your family will like the store brand? Give one a try -- if you don't like it, Meijer will refund your money. And yes, I've taken them up on this guarantee a few times.

Peaches at Jungle Jims!

I was at Jungle Jim's this afternoon.....they have 28# boxes of peaches for $9! This are ripe and ready to can. There were at least 7 boxes left. Interested? Stop in, or call and ask for the produce manager. I have no idea how long this deal will last.

It takes 2-3 pounds of peaches per quart, so 1 box can fill 9-12 jars.

Guess you know what I'll be doing this weekend -- canning peaches. Yum!

The Columbus Home Storage Center (Cannery) has made a few changes.

Date of reopening is the week of August 17, 2009: The Home Storage Center with a New Manager, Brother Larry Lewis.

Dry Pack Hours:

Monday: 1 pm - 4 pm for Bulk Only Pick-Up

Tuesday: 9 am - 3 pm for Bulk Only Pick-Up

Wednesday: 9 am - Noon; 1-4 pm for Dry Pack Canning by Appointment

Thursday: 4 pm - 8 pm for Dry Pack Canning by Appointment

Friday 9 am -Noon; 1pm -4 pm for Dry Packing by Appointment

Saturday 9 am -Noon for Dry Packing by Appointment

All visits to the Home Storage Center are to be set up as appointments.

This is to provide the staff and supplies to be ready for your requests.
