Bulk Canning Day results

We collected orders for 3400 lbs of food for 13 families. We had a 24 foot truck for this run, which amounted to lots of extra space in the truck. We had great help from the missionaries and some of the guys from church. They were a great help!

We will be doing another bulk canning day in August. Get your orders ready. Let's fill this truck!

Here are some of the pictures:

Menu Plan Week of May 25, 2009

Here's my menu plan for the week.

Monday - leftovers (since we are going to a large picnic for lunch)

Tuesday - Chicken Salad on GF buns

Wednesday - Candied Chicken

Thursday - Calzones

Friday - Cinnamon Chicken

Saturday - Brown Sugar Chicken

Sunday - Salsa Chicken and Mexican Style Baked Potatoes (didn't get to it last week)

I do realize that we're eating a lot of chicken this week... It's going to be a busy week -- with a bulk pickup of 3400lbs of food on Friday, and then repackaging of it on Saturday.... just a bit busy.

Plus, a few weeks back, I was able to buy 40lbs of chicken breasts for $30 from Sams Club. Man, I love that place some days! Some day I'll find some time to thaw it out and pressure can it. (Yep, that's how chicken is part of my food storage!)

So, what are you eating this week?

Leadership Development Center - summer opportunity for teens

I am passing along this great opportunity for our youth.

Friends:

Each year more than 100 outstanding teens’ ages 13-18, entering 8th-12th grades gather together for 4 days and 3 nights at our annual Leadership Development Center (LDC).

The American Red Cross and US Bank are proud to play active roles in getting youth prepared to face the challenges ahead. LDC is designed to arm each participant with the essential tools to become a leader within their community and more largely, society. Best of all LDC is facilitated by an outstanding team of well-trained and highly qualified teens! These teens come from a diverse array of schools in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky

Students attending LDC have the opportunity to participate in workshops and sessions on various topics concerning leadership such as how to present yourself, volunteerism, managing money, public speaking, and breaking down media stereotypes. There are also games, guest speakers, and activities all structured to help youth recognize their leadership potential.

We recently extended the deadline for Leadership Development Center (LDC) to May 22.

I have not figured out how to post the application using blogger. If you are interested in this application, email me at wcfoodstorage at gmail dot com. I will be happy to send it to you.

A great summer opportunity for our youth!

Friends-

Please help us in our search to identify youth to participate in an exciting and unique new Summer Youth Volunteer Opportunity.

If you live with or know a student with a dramatic bent*, please ask him or her to consider earning some community service hours with our Creative Drama team this summer. We are looking for 6 – 12 youth to help create and perform three skits (based on three of Aesop’s Fables) that communicate Red Cross messages, encouraging our child audiences to Make a Kit, Make a Plan and Get Trained.

See details below and feel free to forward. There really IS a place for everyone in service to the American Red Cross!
*****

Summer 2009 Youth Volunteer Opportunity!
With the American Red Cross, Cincinnati Area Chapter

-- That’s Edutainment!
Huh? What? What’s Edutainment?? --
-- Dramatic pieces that entertain as they educate!
You mean the audiences have fun while they learn? --
-- Absotively!
Fantabulous! --
+++ +++ +++ +++ +++

Are you a creative type who would like to put your dramatic talent to work for the American Red Cross? Join our Creative Drama Team!

If you have….
• a creative mind
• an adventuresome spirit
• willingness to contribute to a team project
• some acting experience
• an interest in script development
• an understanding of “what works” with child audiences
• the ability to park your ego at the door
• summer daytime availability on Mondays and Tuesdays
• a need to earn community service hours (or not!)

….then THIS is the place for you!

Using three of Aesop’s Fables as a starting point, we will write, rehearse and perform educational skits for a child audience. Our goal will be to delight our audiences as we teach them about some important Red Cross safety messages - and to have some fun ourselves as we perform!

The Lesson
Make a Disaster Plan
Make a Disaster Kit
Learn First Aid

The Story
“The Tortoise and the Hare”
“The Grasshopper and the Ant”
“Androcles and the Lion”

If you can get excited about this creative new endeavor and want to learn more about being a part of it - don’t just sit there --- get on the phone!

Call Diana Wood at 513.792.4036 OR jump on your e-mail and send Diana a message: woodd@cincinnatiredcross.org . She can’t wait to talk with you!

2009 Oregon Frozen Fruit order

I'm passing along this information for anyone who might be interested. Feel free to pass it along, and send the order to Norma, not me.

2009 Oregon Fruit & Berry Order Information
Order Deadline - Must Be Rec'd By June 27th

This is the eleventh year we have been doing a group order for IQF, or individually quick frozen, fruit and berries from Oregon. If you are interested in ordering any of this fruit I must receive your orders and your payment by June 27th. As in the past, all orders must be prepaid.  That's because I have to pay for the full order in advance.  Delivery is usually in the first week of September, but I will notify you by email as soon as I get a delivery date and time.

These fruits come in boxes with individually quick frozen berries (no sugar unless indicated), or as fruit pieces (apples, peaches, apricot halves, red rhubarb). They are packaged inside a large plastic bag in a cardboard box filled with 14# of fruit. The seedless berry purees come in plastic buckets.

Here are the 2009 Oregon fruit and berry prices:

Marion Blackberries - $37/14# box
Red Raspberries - $49/14# box
Boysenberries - $37/14# box
Blueberries - $39/14# box
Strawberries, Sliced With Sugar - $31/14# bucket
Strawberries, Whole - $37/14# box
Loganberries - $37/14# box
Red (Sour) Pie Cherries (pitted) - $37/14# box
Dark Sweet Cherries (pitted) - $39/14# box
Peaches, Peeled & Sliced - $37/14# box
Apricot Halves - $37/14# box
Apples, Peeled & Sliced - $31/14# box
Red Rhubarb - $31/14# box
Seedless Berry Purees - 14# buckets
    Marion Blackberry - $37
    Red Raspberry - $49
    Boysenberry - $37
    Strawberry - $37
    Loganberry - $37
Freezer Jam - box of twelve 16 oz. packages, one flavor - $38
Freezer Jam Gift Pack - six different flavors, 10 oz. containers - $21
(Includes Strawberry, Blackberry, Boysenberry, Blueberry, Red Raspberry         and Boysenberry.)

You may print out this list and send your order to me by snail mail, by e-mail, or bring it to my home in Sharonville in person. Be sure to state which fruits or berries you want, the quantities (how many boxes or buckets of each) and the price per item, then the total for each item. Then please total your whole order and send me a check for the full amount.  Make checks out to me: Norma Curry. Please include your e-mail address so that I can send you an e-mail confirmation affirming that I received your order and payment.  I will also be sending notice about pick-up by e-mail.

Fruit pick-up is usually in September at Northland Ice Skating (or somewhere in the parking lot of the shopping center there) in Evendale, just east of I-75 on Glendale Milford, or west of I-71 on Pfeiffer and 42 (Reading Road). Pfeiffer becomes Glendale Milford west of Reed Hartman.

Most prices this year are $1 higher due to increased fuel costs. Blueberries, which were $52 in 2007, have dropped to $38 this year.  Red Raspberries, which rose sharply last year, have remained at $49/box, due to short crops on the world market in Europe and Chile, as well as continued low yields in the Northwest.

Please feel free to pass this information along to other groups or to anyone who might be interested in ordering. This is an open group order, not restricted to CATCH (Cincinnati Area Teaching Children at Home) members. We can only get this fruit delivery once a year, so don't miss out on Mother Nature's best tasting anti-oxidant boosters. These are great in smoothies, pies, cakes, muffins, in yogurt or on top of ice cream. We put frozen berries in our oatmeal almost every morning.

With today's high transportation costs there are no refunds, so please be sure that you or one of your friends or family can pick up your pre-paid order.

E-mail me if you have questions, need more information or wish to place your order.

May - Today While the Sun Shines... ...we'll get our 2 week water supply

Here is May's theme. Let's get our water supply!

1. Use commercially available water, rotating by date on
bottle.

2. Collect PETE bottles from juice, soda, or other available
sources. Do NOT use milk jugs.

3. Water can be stored for 6 months without pre-treating.

4. Water can be treated for longer storage: Non-chlorinated water
should be treated with bleach. Add 1/8 of a teaspoon (8 drops) of liquid
household chlorine bleach (5 to 6% sodium hypochlorite) for every
gallon (4 liters) of water. Only household bleach without thickeners,
scents, or additives should be used.

5. Aim to store at least 14 gallons of water per person.

6. Build rain barrels and collect non-potable water for other
uses.
